Stay at Camp McCarthy and Explore!

Things to do in McCarthy and Kennicott, Alaska

While relaxing and enjoying Camp McCarthy, most guests will also want to explore the Wrangell St Elias National Park and the ghost towns of McCarthy and Kennicott. The valley is an amazing place; rich in history with ample opportunities for adventurers of all types. Whether you want to have a leisurely day wandering the historic sites, enjoy a moderate hike to the Root Glacier, tackle one of the more difficult hikes to Jumbo or Bonanza Mines, float the Kennicott River, take a flight-seeing tour, focus on the areas amazing restaurants, or all of the above, McCarthy and Kennicott has a little something for everyone.

With so much to do and see, I recommend at least two-nights at Camp McCarthy (our minimum), but three-nights (or four) is perfect. Three nights allows two full days to explore and take in the incredible history and scenery, relax and hangout at Camp. After the long trek here – it’s great to take the time to discover the magic of Camp McCarthy and Wrangell St Elias. It’s truly a special place and I hope to share it with you!
